In fifth grade, Jaime Lyn Burns established two facts that would stay with her for the next decade: her favorite color (purple) and her ambition to write. Everyone should be a writer, for personal or professional interests, to articulate in a text-driven society. For Jaime, writing occupies such an intimate space that the simple word, "writer," is a passionate identity.
At the onset of Jaime's transformative identity, the ten-year-old then believed in a career path as a novelist, heavily inspired by the famous author of the Harry Potter series. But J.K. Rowling received a miracle, a fantasy career, and she struggled immensely to even reach a viable financial status. By high school, Jaime could not hold off the inevitable any longer, and she aspired to work in magazine and book publishing industries for related writing careers post-Bachelors. On top of her studies and spurts of inspiration for poems, short stories, and novels, Jaime participated in her Policy Debate team at Lakeland High School, which required extensive research on political issues related to the resolutions each year (including, but not limited to, national service programs, public health in Sub-Saharan Africa, alternative energy, and social services). She received speaker and team awards at various tournaments every year.
At SUNY New Paltz, Jaime compiled creative writing portfolios, tackled political theory, and examined varied literature with great depth and breadth while pursuing side interests in student leadership, advertising, blogging, and newsletter writing/editing. In May 2013, Jaime graduated from SUNY New Paltz with a Bachelor of Arts in English--Creative Writing and a minor in Political Science, summa cum laude.
Two months later, Jaime found herself searching for jobs like millions of other graduates, competing for the very few spots in NYC. Through her connections as the "literary lifeguard" (what an interviewer would later call her), she found herself at a cubicle on the sixth floor of Random House Inc., otherwise known as Crown Publishing, working on brand social media marketing for two weeks. In the fall, she worked with Authoright as a Marketing Assistant, managing their social media accounts, aiding author campaigns, and creating content on the behalf of the small author services company. From February 2014 to July 2015, Jaime worked to help market higher education titles within Anthropology, Criminal Justice, English, Political Science, and Sociology at Oxford University Press, and represented the company in a multitude of digital and physical capacities. Since then, she moved her expertise and communications acumen onto the field as a sales representative for the New York City region.
Outside of her publishing career and writing habit, Jaime swing dances regularly around New York City, and she would be more than happy to share a video of her latest performance.
